One program that the Arlington school district has recently implemented is the Fire Academy—giving students the opportunity to participate in it during their junior and senior years, and training to become firefighters, meanwhile earning college hours. I am so pleased we are introducing programs such as this to our schools because it offers our students a chance to jumpstart their career and demonstrates careers that are wonderful, but don’t necessarily require a four year college degree from a traditional academic environment.
One of my female students is involved with the program and I am SO IMPRESSED with her ability to do some of the things I have spotted them doing while working on their training in the parking lot.
Recently, I came to school one day to find the Fire Academy students doing this:
I tell you what—these kids have GUTS! I’m amazed at their ability to climb this huge ladder truck!
